Hailee James is the girl with the checkered past and the scars that remind her of it daily. Cameron saved her from a life of hell but will his decision be the wrong one? Can he fix it before Hailee is destined to relive her past? Is history about to repeat itself?
CHAPTER ONE
Cameron
As the saying goes, every King needs his Queen. I thought I was an exception to that rule. That kind of stuff wasn’t for me. I was a self-destructive asshole who would hurt any woman who gave me the chance at anything that resembled a normal, healthy relationship. I let women into my bed but I never let them near my house. That was what the club was for. All I needed in this life was my bike and my brothers who sat around my table while I sat at the head. They had my back and I would die for any one of these fuckers.
Since I was five, all I had ever wanted in life was a Harley and a Cut. My dad had been part of an MC so naturally, I was bred for the same life. I look back on my life and I wonder how different my life would have turned out if I had gone another way. I don’t think I really had the option though. My days now were spent either in the club bar, on my bike or laid out flat on the tattoo table getting more ink done. Nights were spent either in the bar or in the back with some random chick riding my dick. Club whores were always around. They were the uncomplicated relationship that I liked because they knew the deal. I didn’t have to worry about bunny boilers or the stage five clingy bitches not understanding that they would never get anything from me. What I didn’t count on was being wrong. The moment I saw her, I knew she was mine and just how wrong I was. If anyone tried to lay a hand on her then they would have me to deal with. To know our story though, you need to know mine.
My name is Cameron Evans and I am the President of Reapers of Chaos MC. I have been ever since my father tried his hardest to bury the club and he was ex-communicated. Sure, everyone was hesitant when I took lead, but they all knew the truth. There was no one better to go up against my father than me. I was nothing like him and over my dead body would I ever walk that path.
My childhood consisted of nightly beatings whenever he felt like it and more often than not, for no reason at all. He wouldn’t care that I was in the room when he brought home random sluts to fuck. If I moved to leave, then he would throw me up against the wall so I learned quickly to just stay put. Not like he would last long anyway. It also didn’t stop him that Ma was also in the house. I had been curious as to how he got her not to notice his antics, but I regretted getting that answer when I found out.
I hardly ever saw Ma anymore and it worried me more and more. One night when I thought he had left for the club, I snuck down the hall and slowly opened up their bedroom door. I saw her laying on the bed with her right arm stretched out. He was straddling her waist and tying something around it. He leant over and took something from the side table. It wasn’t until I saw the needle go into her arm that all came clear to me. Before I could shut the door and run, he turned and saw me there. I will never forget the look on his face. That was the moment that I vowed to get her out of there and didn’t care what it would take.
Unfortunately though, I was too late. He knew I was on to him and he had to make the problem go away. That was how he later explained it to me. From there, for me, it was a very slippery slope into following in his footsteps. I was drinking not long after that and when that stopped working as a release, I turned to drugs. The very same ones he killed my mother with. He never let me end it all though as much as I wanted too. He would always find a way to bring me back.
I’m not proud of the man I grew up to be, but if it wasn’t for that path then I wouldn’t be where I am today. I lost my mother and sure, to this day, that still fucking hurts and beating my father within an inch of his life and ending up in prison wasn’t my best move, but it made me feel better. I don’t know how luck came to be on my side, but I did a small stint in prison and came out determined to change my life around. I had one thing I needed to do before that though. I had to bring that asshole to his knees and take everything from him. His club, his ride and his life.
Two wrongs don’t make a right, but fuck did I have a good time bringing him down. I started with the club and became prospect. Working my ass off, I was eventually patched in and one by one, I got the guys to turn against him. It was little things at first, but when it all came out about his side activities, the damage was already done. I had all my ducks in a row and he was pulling the trigger, because you see, he didn’t tell the brothers that he had a warehouse full of underage girls that he was selling to the scum bag rival MC. How long he had actually been doing it, I don’t know, but I would put money on the fact that any missing teenager from nearby towns, were in that warehouse. He tried to be sneaky about it but I managed to tail him one night. I watched it all go down. I took the photo’s I needed then got out of there before the FBI showed up. Yep, I had called in the big guns. I needed him gone.
From there, we shut down everything he had built, then piece by piece we started to rebuild on our own terms. I named Chaos as my Vice and Hawk as my Sargent of Arms. From there, we hand-picked our brothers and patched in only people we could trust. Letting go of the guys hadn’t been easy though. It took a lot of work but one way or another, they were no longer part of my Reapers. The last member to get cut loose, was one of the higher ups of my asshole father. Dylan deserved to die, even if he did bring my girl into my life. He broke my one rule which was to never lay a hand on a woman who didn’t consent to it. Some of the club whores had a fetish for being roughed up a little and asked to be. The rest of the guys kept to that, but Dylan would never fucking learn so we cut him loose. It was either that or Corey was going to break his legs and probably a million other parts of his body for touching his kid sister the way he did. Dylan wasn’t worth him giving up his life for though so one night we were all at the local bar when we saw him trying to sneak out un-noticed, so we all got up and followed him out. Corey had his pickup with him, not his bike so we jumped into the back of it and kept on his tail. Eventually he led us back to his place. This guy was as stupid as they come though. He lived in a remote area and not once did he stop and make sure that no one was following him. That worked in our favor though. He pulled up in his driveway and cut the engine. We jumped down from the back of the truck and quietly stalked toward the house. There was six of us so we all circled the house. All it took was one scream and I was breaking down the door and I was inside the house. That was when I saw her. She was battered and bruised and I could tell she had been through hell and back. Dylan looked over at me and smirked. He raised his hand and brought it down against her face. Before I knew what I was doing, I was diving for him and wrapping my arms aro
und his torso as we fell to the ground. I got back up and brought my fist down against his jaw. Bringing my fist down repeatedly, I didn’t stop until one of the guys pulled me off of him. I kicked out with my foot and tried to kick him, but I was too far away.
Pulling myself away, I moved to where the fucking animal had the girl tied up. I got her loose from the ropes and took off my jacket. Wrapping it around her to cover her up from the room full of guys, she shied away from me. I turned and looked over my shoulder. This asshole had better be thankful these guys were here. I did what I could to help her out of this hell.
“Check that there are no more girls around and get rid of that useless piece of shit. I’ll be back soon.” Corey threw me his keys and I helped her into the truck. Pulling the blanket he had in the back over, I covered her with it as she curled up away from me. Starting his truck up, I got her as far away from that hell as I could and never looked back.
CHAPTER TWO
Cameron
I got out of there and didn’t look back. I trusted the guys would get done what I needed them to. My concern though was the innocent girl beside me. Taking a peek over at her as she curled up more, I didn’t say anything as we headed back into town. What the fuck could I say to her? I had no idea how long she had been in there and judging by the marks and bruises on her arms, I really didn’t want to know that answer or else I would be going back there and doing more than beating the shit out of Dylan. Something told me this girl needed me more though.
“Darlin’, where can I take you? Hospital?”
“No. They will ask to many questions.” I nodded and knew it was true. Questions for not just her, but they would want the one who did this to her and over my dead body was he seeing the light of day again. He would soon be just another missing person to get lost in the system. Not that anyone would report him missing but should hell freeze over.
“I have to take ya somewhere, Darlin’. I’m not about to leave ya alone after that.” I looked over quickly at her and saw her staring out of the window. “Family I can call maybe?” She shook her head and sunk down in the seat more. It was just a whisper so I only just managed to catch her response.
“Why do you think I was in that hell.” I blinked and felt my body tense up. What the actual fuck?!
“I’m sorry, I think I missed that. Did you just say your family put you there?” She nodded her head and wiped her face with the sleeve of my jacket. Mother fuckers! What was wrong with this world? Letting out a small sigh, I took my phone out of my pocket and called Doc. She needed to be checked out. “Doc, meet me at mine.” I hung up the phone again and took the turn off toward my house. It had the same seclusion that Dylan’s did, but not surrounded by bushland like his was. I moved in once the club started doing well and didn’t need me to sleep there day and night just to make sure shit ran properly. It was a little over the top just for me, but I didn’t care. I loved my house. On the weekends, I loved nothing more than stepping out onto the deck that went the whole way around and drinking my coffee as I soaked up the quiet. If it was an emergency then Hawk or Chaos would call me. Other than that, they left me alone until I dragged my ass in there. I had never let a woman out here. There was something about this woman though that had me willing to break that rule.
I pulled up in my driveway and cut the engine. Looking over at her, I waited to speak to see if I would have a freak out on my hands but she was just staring out of the front window looking into space. I was at a loss of what to do here. “You’ll be safe here.” She turned her head and looked at me with a vacant expression. It was that look that just broke me. I knew, no matter what, I had to protect her like she was my own. Her own family had let her down and she had no one. Well now she had me and my band of fucked up misfits. Opening up the truck door, I moved around to the passenger side and opened the door. I held out my hand to her and she unfolded her legs and took my hand. Helping her down, I closed the door behind her and walked up toward my front door with her following hesitantly behind me. I knew she didn’t trust me and it was smart not to granted what the poor girl had just been through, but I needed to keep her safe.
Unlocking the front door, I stepped to the side and let her walk past me. I took Corey’s blanket from her and dropped it in the corner. Leaving her standing by the door, I went down to my room and took out a clean pair of sweats and a hoodie. Moving back to the door, I passed them too her. “They might be a little big, but you’ll be more comfortable.” She gave me a small smile and reached out and took them from me. “I’m Cameron, by the way.”
“Hailee.” I closed the door and pointed to where the bathroom was.
“Fresh towels in there if you want to take a shower or anything. If you are hungry I can make you something to eat. I’m not the best cook, but something is better than nothing. Doc should be here soon.” Hailee gave me a nod and moved toward the bathroom. Once the door was closed, I let out a breath and ran my hand over my unshaven face. What the hell was I getting myself in to? I shook my head and moved to the kitchen. Taking out a beer from the fridge, I opened it and took a long drink from the bottle. I took some eggs and stuff out and moved to put them on the counter. As I took another drink from the bottle, there was a knock on the door. Setting my beer down, I walked to the front entrance and opened up the door. Seeing Tucker there, I reached out and shook his hand. “Thank’s for coming Doc.” I gave Katy a smile and I was glad to see that he had brought her too. Letting them inside, I motioned them to sit in the front room. Walking over to the bathroom, I knocked softly. “You okay, Hailee?” I heard a quiet yes come back and moved away from the door to give her some privacy.
“What’s going on, Cam?” Taking a seat across from them, I leant forward, resting my arms against my knees.
“Dylan’s been doing some shady shit lately so we followed him when he left the bar tonight. When he got back to his, we surrounded the place to try and get a feel for what he was up to when we heard a scream. We broke inside and found some poor girl tied up. What he’d been doing to her is all kinds of fucked up. How I got her out of there without her freaking out is beyond me, but I brought her back here. I need you to check her over for me.” Tuck’s brow went up when I told him I brought her back here. He knew me. He knew I didn’t do that normally. He gave me a nod. I heard a noise and looked up. I saw Hailee standing there in my oversize clothes and I swear, I had never seen a chick look so hot.
“Doc, Katy, this is Hailee. Hailee this Tucker and Katy. They are friends of mine.” She gave them a small wave and moved over to my side. I had the urge to wrap my arm around her, but I fought that and sat back down in my chair. Tucker stood up from his seat and moved toward her. In that instant, it was like a flip had switched in her head and she lost it.
“No! Don’t come any closer! Not again! I won’t let it happen again! I won’t let you touch me again!” She moved to the corner and sunk down, curling into a ball again. She gripped her hair and tangled her fingers in it as she buried her face in her knees. I stood up and moved to step in between her and Tucker.
“Hey, it’s okay. He isn’t going to hurt you. You are safe now.”
“No! He’ll get me! He always does! He will let me get away and come after me!” She looked up at me with tears in her eyes and it broke me. “Please, don’t let him get me. Please help me!” I inched closer to her and placed my hand on her back. She shook off my hand so I dropped it.
“Please, Hailee. You are safe with me. I swear on my life.” She looked up at me and I carefully reached toward her. Running my hand over her head, I rubbed her back and looked over at Katy for help. Katy slowly moved over to us and crouched down.
“Hailee, we need to check you over. If you like, I can do it.” It took a little time but she slowly nodded her head. I moved a little closer to her and scooped her up off the floor. I carried her into the bedroom and laid her carefully down on the bed. Just holding her against me, I could feel that she was all skin and bones. While Katy checked her over, I was making her food. My girl needed to eat.
